Presented by Ian Hamilton African Voices
This month, Bookmark looks at two writers from Africa.
Nuruddin Farah is a Somali, the author of a highly acclaimed novel - Maps. But the nearest he can get to his native country is Khartoum in the Sudan, for his work is banned in Somalia and he himself is a wanted man.
Bookmark filmed him as he settled into the latest in a long line of adopted countries and Farah talked about
Islam, the oral tradition and the censorship that has kept him on the move so long.
Don Mattera , a poet from Sophiatown, is on the way back to his native South
Africa. Bookmark caught him in London, where he talked about his extraordinary career as a gangster and a freedom fighter and the years he spent as a banned person under apartheid. Directors
