In a steam room at a Carlsbad reducing clinic, three women meet, with one thing in common - they are all fat. A friendship begins which is cemented by a mutual passion for bridge, but on the surface they are a bizarre trio. The 'no-nonsense' 'Frank' Hickson favours men's clothes, ties, cropped hair, and sports a monocle; Arrow Sutcliffe has a penchant for handsome continentals; while the placid Beatrice Richman has an insatiable appetite for rich food. One year the women take a house in Antibes and enjoy an idyllic life until an intruder threatens to destroy their happiness.
