Pepe le Moko

on BBC Two England

The classic French feature film starring Jean Gabin, Mircille Balin.
With the police hot on his heels, Pépé le Moko, a flamboyant Parisian jewel thief, has taken refuge in the Algerian Casbah. In these tortuous, sinister alleys he can safely live with some of his old style. But Pépé longs for Paris and when he meets a beautiful French girl, romance makes him reckless. Duvivier's powerful drama was initially deemed too realistic for American audiences, but spawned two Hollywood re-makes and the apocryphal line,'Come with me to the Casbah!'
Screenplay by Henri Jeanson, Roger D'Ashelbe and Julien Duvivier from the novel by Roger D'Ashelbe.
