One Hundred Great Paintings

on BBC Two England

This week's theme:
The Nude and the Naked Manet (1832-83)
Olympia, at The Louvre, Pans
Manet was a man of his time and depicted the society in which he lived in his paintings. He was too honest. When this picture was first shown in public it had to be hung so that the offended public could not reach it with their sticks and umbrellas.
