Dove Linkhorn, a penniless farmer, is searching for Hallie, the woman he loves. Along the way he becomes entangled with Kitty Twist, a wild, lawless girl, and descends into the seamy and corrupt underworld of New Orleans. This screen adaptation of Nelson Algren's controversial novel is most famous for its title sequence and features a memorable performance by Jane Fonda in her second film.
