This week Dalrymple follows the route the apostle known as Doubting Thomas was likely to have taken from Palestine, by land from Jerusalem to Elat, then by sea to the Malabar coast of south west India. There St Thomas would have found a thriving, wealthy community of spice-trading Romans and Jews.
