Despite the spread of big-money snooker tournaments throughout the world, there can still only be one world champion, and tonight he will be celebrating victory in the most prestigious event of them all. Stephen Hendry is the defending champion, having beaten the eternal " bridesmaid" Jimmy White a year ago. But Hendry has been out of form lately and White entered the competition without a win this year.
Tonight the two-day,
35-frame final will be fought to a finish on BBC2. At the other extreme to last year's one-sided
18-5 match, fans will never forget the early-hours tension of 1985, when the last ball of the last frame gave Dennis Taylor victory over Steve Davis. This year, though, Taylor was a first-round loser.
