Tamas -The Darkness

on BBC Two England

with Derek Malcolm
The novel Tamas depicting the communal violence preceding the partition of India was published in 1974. Its dramatised screening on Indian television, 40 years after partition, created an unprecedented political controversy involving the Bombay High Court and the Supreme Court of India in attempts to stop its screening. Derek Malcolm talks to author Bhisham Sahni and to Govind Nihalani , the director of Tamas. A five-part dramatisation of Tamas begins on Saturday on BBC2. A Network East production
