The Barcelona Chair
It was designed by MIES VAN DER ROHE for the King of Spain to sit on during the 1929 Barcelona World's Fair. Expensive, austere, it's as much a work of architecture as Mies's influential, if stark, buildings.
It's a chair to admire rather than to settle back in, a status symbol for the international corporation rather than the sitting room. But it's still very much in production, an icon with its roots in the Bauhaus and the heroic age of modem design.
