Golf: The Open
The climax of the 127th Open championship from Royal Birkdale. Last year, American Justin Leonard found himself five shots off the lead going into the last day, but a superb six-under-par final round saw him claim the trophy.
Leonard's success meant agony for Sweden's Jesper Parnevik, who until the closing holes had looked a certain winner. Hopes of ending a six-year wait for a British triumph appear to lie with the likes of Scot Colin Montgomerie, regarded as the best player not to have won a Major, and England's Lee Westwood.
