The Lively Arts: Orpheus in the Underground

on BBC Two England

A music fantasy by Carl Davis to a text by John Wells
with Julian Littman as Orpheus, Joanna Carlin as Eurydice

This specially commissioned half-hour pop opera is the BBC's entry for the 1977 Salzburg Television Opera Competition.
Orpheus, whose music has the power to entrance his listeners, is here updated to the role of a busker in the London Underground. This version of the legend, in which his girl-friend, Eurydice, is pursued by an amorous commuter, unfolds amidst the tunnels, trains, lifts and escalators of a strange and distorted Underworld.Â
