After Fanny's lover Marius sails away in search of adventure, she marries the ageing widower Panisse to give the child she is expecting a name. The three leading stars provide the French accent for this colourful American version of Marcel Pagnol 's trilogy of plays set in the Marseilles of the 1930s.
