Time to Back Britain?
Whether it's Japanese cars, Italian shoes or Hong Kong textiles, the pressure from foreign imports is growing. Nearly a third of the goods we buy in Britain come from abroad. One solution, promoted by companies like BL, is a ' buy British' campaign. Others are demanding stricter import controls.
Peter Hobday and Nick Clarke investigate the new mood of protectionism in a world that is supposed to be moving towards freer trade. How are the Americans reacting? And what about Japan, the trading nation all the others love to hate? Should Britain be finding new ways of looking after herself in a severe world recession?
