Film of the Week: The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds

on BBC Two England

starring Joanne Woodward Nell Potts , Roberta Wallach
Actor Paul Newman proved himself one of Hollywood's finest directors with this, his second film - a sensitive version of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play. His real-life wife, Joanne Woodward , plays the slatternly Beatrice Hunsdorffer , a woman deserted by her husband and desperately attempting to bring up her daughters with little money and diminishing hope. Their daughter, Nell, plays the gentle Matilda, whose experiments with marigolds win her a school prize in the film's powerful climactic scene.
