'The first time in surgery is going to be great,' says
Jacquie Jowsey , one of the new intake of student nurses at St James's Hospital, Leeds. r 'And seeing a baby actually being born - I should think it's an amazing experience.'
Jacquie originally wanted to be an actress. She's never been away from home.
While she and her group of 24 idealistic newcomers settle in at the hostel,
Theresa Gallagher , only eight months into the course, is working nights, helping to run a major surgical ward. Because of staff-shortages, she's sometimes left in charge. She's already an indispensable part of the hospital work-force.
Third-year student
Joanne Senior administers the drugs trolley and instructs the beginners, while nervously awaiting her final exam results. Four of her group have already dropped out. How will the new students, mostly fresh from school, cope with working on the wards, giving their first injection, caring for the dying?
