Japan's entry for the 1968 Italia Prize
Eight-year-old Kozue Yoshimori is one of some 200 thalidomide children born in Japan. She had not been able to attend school because she was born without arms. In October 1967 her grandmother took her to the Tokushma University Hospital to be fitted with artificial arms and hands. As she was without even vestigial arms, special artificial limbs had to be invented, and tonight's film tells the story of how science overcame the many technical problems involved before little Kozue could join the school-children she had previously only watched through the playground railings.
