Last Days In Sinai
Reporter Trevor Philpott
The plainest lesson of post-war politics has been that ground taken by the gun is not given back.
But as the first condition of the Camp David Peace Agreement, Israel promised that the whole of the Sinai Peninsula, conquered in the Six Day War of 1967, should be handed, bloodlessly, back to Egypt. Now the deadline for repayment has come and gone. What has happened to Sinai in those 15 years of occupation? What difference will the evacuation make to the land, to the Israelis who arc going, and the Arabs who will remain behind?
