The climax of the biennial competition that sets out to find the nation's most musically gifted youngster.
Five finalists, representing keyboard, percussion, string, brass and woodwind, have been chosen from a 25-strong semi-final line-up. Each will play a concerto alongside the Northern Sinfonia - conducted by Yan Pascal Tortelier - before a judging panel chaired by Marin Alsop and comprising Peter Sadlo, Thea King, Sergei Nakariakov, Angela Hewitt, Carlos Bonnell and Kathryn McDowell. During their deliberations, Nicola Benedetti, who won the title in 2004 with a dazzling performance of Szymanowski's First Violin Concerto, entertains the audience, Introduced by composer Howard Goodall from the Sage Gateshead.
