The story of an English genius - John Constable (1776-1837)
Constable wrote in his diary 'Painting with me is another word for feeling, and I associate my careless boyhood with all that lies on the banks of the Stour.'
This film evokes the poetry and the beauty of the scenes that Constable painted. It shows how his work also reflected the tensions in his own nature as he struggled to gain recognition for both himself and his art. He lived in a society that was shocked by his originality and indifferent to the freshness of his vision.
