John Meredith, a senior clerk in the City firm of Brander and Sons, has a tendency to worry obsessively about the future. He has never particularly liked his job but knuckled down to it for twenty-seven years because of the security it seemed to offer - and the prospect of being promoted to General Manager by the age of fifty. Now, just before his fiftieth birthday, he learns from his boss that another, much junior man, is to be preferred as General Manager. This is a shattering blow, and John reacts to it in a surprising way. All his life he has devoted his initiative and intelligence to the service of Brander's, but he now decides to put these same gifts to work on his own account - to the consternation of his family and friends.
