Cold War: Backyard 1954-89

on BBC Two England

To prevent any Latin American government from embracing Communism and threatening US interests, America urged the region to sever all ties with the Soviet Union. American-backed forces overthrew the democratically elected regime in Guatemala, but the Cuban-Soviet alliance was strengthened by the failed US Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961. In 1973, the CIA undermined the rule of Chile's President
Allende by means of economic destabilisation and General Pinochet staged a successful coup. America continued to employ covert practices to suppress Communism in Nicaragua, El Salvador and Grenada. Contributors include
General Pinochet, Fidel Castro and Henry Kissinger.
