The Four Seasons

on BBC Two England

Four films about common experiences which highlight people's lives.
3: When the Rocking Chair Gets You Does retirement mean being discarded by society? Or can it mean the start of a new life?
Northumberland pit electrician Alf Goodall , Bournemouth bank manager John Chinneck , and Concorde pilot Leo Budd , all face retirement but from different angles with a different outlook.
Reporter Bernard Falk follows ALF goodall down the pit on his last day to share the camaraderie which he will miss most; crosses to New York with leo BUDD flying the machine which is his obsession; and toasts JOHN CHINNECK when the great day finally arrives. He talks to Lord Soper who is still going strong at nearly 80; and Kathleen Gibberd , 84, who, thinks the old should be respected by society for their wisdom.
