1980: several cases of a rare skin cancer are reported among gay men in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles. As the infection claims more and more lives, rival teams of scientists on two continents race to be the first to isolate what would become known as the Aids virus. This drama chronicles the early years of the Aids epidemic from the viewpoint of the young doctor who spearheaded the research in America, and the handful of individuals who fought political indifference, lack of funding, prejudice and ignorance to do battle with a deadly illness.
