Josephine, a shy eldest daughter, feels that her world has fallen apart when her father dies, and reacts by trying to bind the remaining family even closer together. As Josephine takes over the household management from her mother, her sister Anna is forced into a servant's role while Walter, their handicapped brother, becomes a spoiled darling.
