From BBC North East: Pipeline
When work began in January 1975, it looked like being a ten-month job - the building of a 36-inch diameter steel gas main from Long-town, north of Carlisle, to Bishop Auckland in County Durham. But those 65 miles of underground pipeline - part of the national network transmitting North Sea Gas across the country -met many delays. In the end, the project was only completed in August 1976.
