Ballet aficionados celebrate the life and achievements of Edris Stannus, the inspirational Irish dancer known as "Madam" who was born 100 years ago today. A graduate of Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, as Ninette de Valois she founded the Royal Ballet, Birmingham Royal Ballet and the Royal Ballet School, and sent her disciples to foreign climes to instigate other such ventures.
In this programme three contemporary ballet stars - Darcey Bussell, Joseph Cipolla and Sarah WiIdor - rehearse roles from Madam's works The Prospect before Us and The Gods Go A-Begging. There is also archive footage of Madam herself which illuminates her teaching and rehearsing methods, as she practises steps from the Rake's Progress and Checkmate.
