A Theatre Piece for Singers, Players and Dancers
Last month 200 Yale University students - average age 21 - gave the European premiere of Bernstein's Mass. Cameras were in the Vienna Konzerthaus to record a special TV version for BBC.
Mass is not a mass in the ordinary sense: it is an entertainment for the young-minded. The text, from the liturgy of the Roman mass with additional words by Stephen Schwartz and the composer, is about faith and people's reaction to it.
