To the public the first Daguerreotypes seemed like witchcraft. At his home in Burgundy Nicephore Niepee made his first experiments as early as 1816, but he died before his partner, Daguerre, achieved success in 1839 with the method filmed for this programme. Narrated by BRIAN COE
