War season of films commemorating the British experience of the Second World

Young Violette 's life in London is barely touched by the war until she meets and marries a French officer. Then the war takes him from her, and she finds herself drawn into espionage work, risking her life in occupied France.
Based on the book by R J Minney , this is a dramatisation of a true story. Violette eventually found herself incarcerated in the Ravensbruck concentration camp, and was posthumously awarded the George Cross medal for her bravery. Director Lewis Gilbert is better known for his later comedy films, Educating Rita and Shirley Valentine.
