(A Special Day)
Starring Sophia Loren, Marcello Mastroianni
A new series of outstanding foreign films begins tonight with an award-winning drama shown for the first time in this country in its original, Italian version. Ettore Scola's wonderful evocation of pre-war Rome is enhanced by a colour process developed specially for this film and, of course, by the performance of the most famous acting partnership in the Italian cinema.
On the particular day in May 1938 when the population of Rome fills the streets to celebrate Hitler's meeting with Mussolini, another meeting takes place in an anonymous block of flats that will bring more lasting joy and strength to the people concerned: Antoinetta, a down-trodden housewife, and Gabriele, a lonely radio announcer, recently sacked for being a homosexual.
