Following last week's documentary on Fred Zinnemann, BBC2 presents a short season of his films spanning almost 20 years of a career as one of the movies' most consistently creative directors. To open the season Act of Violence, a powerful melodrama of guilt and revenge, comes from the early days of Fred Zinnemann's Hollywood career.

Frank Enley's bright future as a successful young businessman in a small California town is suddenly threatened by the appearance of a figure from the past - a mysterious limping man with a gun in his pocket and a terrible score to settle.
