9.20am Police Powers First of six films on the Police and the public. Keeping PACE?
The Police and Criminal
Evidence Act 1984 - PACE - is the police officers' bible, a statutory set of rules which governs every aspect of police work from stop and search, to arrest and detention, to the handling of complaints.
The Police Federation say that PACE is too restrictive and hinders crime detection. Others feel that record keeping and a new complaints procedure don't go far enough to protect the suspect from possible abuse.
