In AD 360 a Roman gentleman farmer commissioned a mosaic for the private chapel of his country house. In 1978 an English gentleman farmer had it excavated and restored as a tourist attraction. The famous Orpheus mosaic, which may well depict a pagan mystery religion that rivalled Christianity in the Roman Empire, was accidentally discovered in the 18th century. Lost for 250 years, it was only found again in 1977 and has been restored by the present owner of the Littlecote Estate
