Destination Doha 2: The Difficult Bit
Four men in three massive 40-ton lorries left England seven days ago on a 5,000-mile journey through 11 countries. Their destination, Doha. The cargo, a bizarre mixture of goods for this capital of the newly-rich oil Emirate of Qatar.
Last week's programme followed the adventures and misadventures of these four men across Europe to Istanbul. This week it's ' Good-bye Europe' as they set out over the Bosphorus bridge into the emptiness of Asia Minor, ahead the Middle East and Arabia. This is ' the difficult bit'. There are problems enough in Turkey and Syria, but there is no road at all south from the Baghdad road out of Jordan to the pipeline in Northern Saudi Arabia. The lorries simply turn off the tarmac and head out into the desert.
Not so many years ago this journey might have been considered a major piece of world exploration. Now, for those four drivers, it's just a job. but not an easy one. Narrator BENNY GREEN
