Concerto
Last of three programmes.
The pianist Mitsuko Uchida and the conductor Jeffrey Tate have established a remarkably close musical rapport, notably while recording the complete cycle of Mozart piano concertos.
Tonight they perform one of the greatest of them, No 24 in c minor (K491). Beforehand they share some insights into this favourite work. They talk of the special nature of the soloist's role (sometimes starring, sometimes accompanying); of the delights of Mozart's orchestration; and of the 'despairing darkness' which pervades the last pages of the concerto.
