The Right to Manage

on BBC Two England

An inquiry into worker participation.
Jim Murray is a Works Convenor -Chairman of the shop stewards at Vickers in Newcastle. This programme looks at his life style, his work, his interests and his goal - worker participation. He wants the men on the shop floor to have a greater say in the running of the company. Now it looks as though he may get just that. The Government is setting up a committee of inquiry to advise on industrial democracy and envisages trade union representatives on the boards of most companies in about two years.
What will participation mean for workers and management and what form will it take? Whatever its effects, it could radically transform the way that British industry is run. The Right to Manage looks at the conflicts in industry as seen through the eyes of union convenor JIM MURRAY and with union leaders, workers, managers and directors considers how worker participation may help to resolve those conflicts.
