Forty Minutes

on BBC Two England

... of documentary The Rovers
1982/3 was Tranmere Rovers centenary season. They should have been over the moon. But by November they were a very sick parrot indeed. Everywhere soccer gates were dwindling. But when you have only 1,500 supporters and live in the shadow of Anfield, the defection of only a few can edge you nearer the Receiver.
To pay their debts they sold players. By selling players they lost even more supporters. It was a downward spiral. Twice they were to make their farewell appearance. Twice they were saved. Even today something could blow the final whistle on the centenary celebrations.
