Det-Insp. Mitchell is investigating two murders committed on the same night. Both victims (a middle-aged coloured man and a boy of nineteen) have been strangled by a piece of white telephone cord. Hanging by a similar piece of cord in the porch of the first victim's home is a white cockerel and in the second a grotesque puppet.
