Go to an unknown forest. Take a highly detailed map, and run as fast as you can from the start to the finish as marked on that map, calling in at various control points on the way. This is Orienteering and the skill, provided you are fit and athletic, is in choosing the fastest route between control points.
The sixth World Championships were staged recently amongst the magnificent forests of Morayshire in north-east Scotland. Competitors from 19 nations navigated their way through conifer, beech, over rivers and up and down sand dunes in pursuit of a world title. Both Individual and Relay races were dominated by the Scandinavians but it was the spirit and friendliness of the event that enabled all to enjoy themselves.
