As young animals begin to grow up they become able to feed themselves, but their parents must still protect and educate them. Play becomes increasingly important. It exercises the muscles; it teaches size, shape, speed, and dimension; it is practice for hunting, for fighting, for escape, and for the whole business of living.
Young storks exercise their wings; young lions learn to pounce, young baboons to climb and tumble, and young children to play with bricks and with each other.
