Excavations on Santorini - a volcanic island 60 miles north of Crete in the Aegean - have revealed a buried Minoan city. Like Pompeii it is preserved under a mantle of pumice and ash. About 3,500 years ago the volcano of Santorini erupted; part of the island disappeared beneath the sea and the Minoan civilisation on Crete was destroyed.
