Few issues in education raise quite as much heat as the question of testing, particularly testing children as young as 7. The government's task group, set up to look at assessment and testing, has proposed a sophisticated system of ten achievement levels designed to get away from the idea of 'passing' or 'failing'. But can this new system be made to work in both secondary and primary schools, and what will it actually mean for the pupils in the classroom?
