The third in a series of six films which explore the achievements and fascination of practical bird-watching with Tony Soper.
Movement and Migration
We now know that swallows don't spend the winter at the bottom of pools as was once thought - they fly to Africa, just as geese which breed in the Arctic winter, spend the winter here. Some birds even migrate to special places, where they can moult. The comings and goings of birds - which way they go, how long it takes them, how long they live for - are well known, thanks to the efforts of bird-ringers. But there is still a lot more to learn.
