Meet the Caldicot folk
A programme compiled by D. L. Jones
Bounded by the estuary of the Wye to the east, and by that of the Usk to the west, with the main railway line between Newport and the Severn Tunnel as its northern boundary, lies the Caldicot Level, on the shores of the Bristol Channel.
It is a land of rich pasture, small farms, and many villages. Its ditches and 'rhines' surround every field and accompany every road on both sides. At the water's edge the great sea-wall stands guard over this low-lying land, which otherwise would be easy prey to the great tides.
In this programme the Caldicot folk will speak for themselves-a farmer, a hay-cutter, a villager, a fisherman, and the vicar of one of the parishes.
