This hour of music, which is something of a sentimental pilgrimage, is one of a series of concerts in which the BBC Scottish Orchestra and Singers co-operate with the musical activities of one of the smaller provincial centres. Ian Whyte , the conductor, will find it almost a home-coming, for he is a native of DunfermJine and played on the Dunfermline Abbey organ when he was quite young. 
Dunfermline as a town is permeated by two main traditions-its historical associations and the beneficence of Andrew Carnegie , once a poor Dunfermline boy, who became master of the world's steel. 
Worked into the fabric of the square tower of the Abbey are the giant letters KING ROBERT THE BRUCE , allowing one word to each side. 
The Bruce was buried in Dunfermline in 1329 and in 1818 workmen engaged in restoration came across his vault. Official inspection of the skeleton, enclosed in two different coats of sheet lead, showed that the breastbone had been sawn to allow the removal of his heart, which was the Bruce's dying wish, so that it might go crusading against the Saracens.
