The scene is laid in Aragon and Biscay in the early years of the fifteenth century 
Scene 1 : Saragossa : a hall in the royal palace of the Aljaferia. Just before midnight 
Scene 2 : The garden of the same palace, with a marble staircase leading up to the royal apartments. It is night, thick clouds cover the moon 
Scene 3 : On the slopes of a mountain in Biscay. It is just dawn 
Scene 4 : The inner court of the Jerusalem Convent. Night 
Scene 5 : A military encampment. In the distance the fortress of Castellar is visible 
Scene 6 : A room in Castellar, opening into a chapel 
Scene 7: A wing of the palace of Aljaferia. At the corner there is a , tower, the windows of which are barred with iron. The night is very dark 
Scene 8 : A loathsome dungeon. At one side is a barred window; at the back, a door. A smouldering lamp hangs from the ceiling
