A personal account by Dr. William Brydon , the sole survivor
Read by his grandson, Francis Scott
The episode of Dr. Brydon's arrival at Jellalabad with the tidings of the appalling disaster that had wiped out 16,000 troops was commemorated by Lady Butler in her picture, ' The Remnants of an Army '. Once he had arrived at Jellalabad Dr. Brydon wrote down from memory and memoranda an account of his thrilling experiences, a small edition of which was subsequently printed privately. Mr. Scott, who is to speak this afternoon is the possessor of what is believed to be the only copy extant.
Dr. Brydon led a wildly adventurous life, serving in Afghanistan, Bhopal, and Burma. In 1857 he was with his wife and two children in the beleauguered garrison of Lucknow.
