In a recent broadcast in the ' Men and Matters ' series, Sir John Boyd Orr compared the progress of housing in Scotland with that made in England, and the comparison was not to Scotland's advantage. Nevertheless, the cities of Scotland are being transformed. On their outskirts are springing up crops of new dwellings, some of which house those who have in the past had to live in unhealthy and overcrowded conditions. Today various speakers, under the chairmanship of Lord Wark, a Scottish Judge, will discuss the problem of housing and slums. The debate will be occupied, perhaps, less with the old conditions than with the new. A good deal will be said about the new housing estates, not all of which are the fruit of slum clearance schemes...
