' Makers of Scotland'
5—' Scott—The Man who saved our
Past'
H. J. C. GRIERSON , LL.D ., Emeritus Professor of Rhetoric and English Literature in the University of Edinburgh
There are few countries which have given the world so many enthralling stories as Scotland, and it is a matter of opinion whether the authentic ones are more interesting than those that have partly sprung from the imagination. The life of Sir Walter Scott , which Emeritus Professor H. J. C. Grierson will tell this afternoon, never has lost and probably never will lose its appeal to listeners of every age. Its main outline is well known, but who can explain his genius both in verse and prose, and who does not stand amazed at his fortitude when financial ruin overtook him in 1826? But perhaps his greatest service to Scotland was his vivid recreation of the past and its influence on European literature.
