Edouard Lalo (1823-1892) though bom in Lille was of Spanish descent. He studied both the violin and the 'cello at the Lille Conservatoire and at the age of sixteen entered the Paris Conservatoire, taking piano and composition as well. Lato is best known in England by his Symphonie espagnole for violin and orchestra and his Namouna ballet. His opera The King of Ys was first produced at the Opera Comique in 1888 with great success. It includes the ' scene of an inundation, for it will be recalled that in the Breton legend the city of Ys was submerged in the sea. The inundation scene is a very remarkable piece of music, and probably contributed to the success of the opera, apart from the overture, which has always been popular in concert halls.
